I think the viewer stand-in thing was exactly how it was intended to function. It just worked better for some of us than for others, I guess.
But my big problem with it was precisely that it didn't seem to me that the Doctor ought to be that ambivalent or upset about changing again, not after all this time. (And, unlike a lot of viewers, I didn't share the reluctance to let go of that particular regeneration -- I liked a lot of things about Ten, but at that point, I did think it was time for a new Doctor -- so I wasn't feeling it along with him.) The realization, however retconny, that as far as he knew this was the last time really does change my perspective on that, though
