Anyone is welcome to leave prompts, even if you're not planning to take part & please do keep leaving prompts until sign-ups close on 13th March.

(Authors, however, aren't obliged to claim prompts to take part; nor is it an exchange - if you leave a prompt an author claiming it may interpret it as freely as they wish.)

I can never remember whether it's the novelisation (which I'd read about twenty million times before I ever saw the rest of it, save the last ten minutes) or if it's in the serial itself, but he and Gilbert have this whole quite messed up backstory; it's great.

I do believe my fondness for Time Lords and insane AIs is showing.

I'm pretty sure that's in the novelization, but it's been way, waaaay too long since I read it. I do seem to remember it being great, though.

I have this feeling there's a briefer version of it in the serial, when Gilbert M and Joseph C talk to each other before they run away, but I'm never quite sure, because I did read that novelisation a ridiculous number of times when I was a teenager and had no access to such things as actual episodes & it's very easy to amalgamate the two. (Fans don't know they're alive today. *shakes walking stick*)

I was thinking you're right, but I couldn't remember the details. But the internet always comes through for us! I found it in a transcript:

JOSEPH: Close to the Kandyman, were you?
GILBERT: I made him.
JOSEPH: Really? How very interesting.
GILBERT: Only his body. His mind was very much his own.
JOSEPH: I certainly don't recall the chap ever arriving.
GILBERT: He was born in the Kandy Kitchen.
JOSEPH: Whereas you came from Bazsilf, if memory serves.
GILBERT: I was exiled from Bazsilf. I brought his bones here in a suitcase.
JOSEPH: Exiled, you say?
GILBERT: I made a mistake. I was working in the state laboratories. Without realising it, I invented a deadly new germ. The disease wiped out nearly half the population.
JOSEPH: Still, hardly your fault. Can't you just pack him up and start again?
GILBERT: Not this time. He's better off this way. The Kandyman's gone.

God, I love that episode, in all its bizarre, brilliant insanity. :)

Aha, they did! Thank you! Unfortunately, I stupidly gave away most of my DW novelisations years ago, but I remember there was a good deal more, including his original name. (I thought TARDIS Wiki might have it, but it just has the TV info.)

Here's the relevant passage from the novelisation:

The mention of the name of Gilbert M’s home planet brought memories flooding back, memories he hoped had disappeared for ever. Happy memories, of when he had been appointed chief state scientist, the youngest ever to hold the post, and memories of his friendly rivalry with Seivad, the other great scientist on Vasilip. And of how, after years of competition, they had finally worked together, pushing science to new boundaries.

There were unhappy memories, too, of things starting to go wrong. He remembered the king’s order that Seivad and he were to be killed on sight; he remembered their flight from the capital, and the lone vigilante who tracked them to their hiding place in the mountains. Gilbert had been out that day, foraging for food. When he returned to their but he found Seivad wounded and left for dead. Working through the night, Gilbert had managed to save Seivad’s mind. The next day he had stowed away on the first flight out of Vasilip which had taken him, and what was left of Seivad, to Terra Alpha. Finally he remembered Helen A’s cruel ultimatum, when she had discovered his true identity: create for me a monster out of Seivad, or return to wandering the space lanes looking for a home. Exhausted, Gilbert had complied with her wishes, fashioning the Kandy Man out of the only raw materials at his disposal. And so Seivad had been imprisoned in an executioner’s body, his mind twisted with anger and injustice.

(These days, one can't help wondering whether the Kandyman's full name was Llessur T Seivad).

Thank you! Those are brilliant prompts and I've added them to the list. (And you're right, the EotW has some fantastic guest characters - David Whitaker is always so good at that sort of thing).

I'm hesitating, however, over the War Chief is the Master prompt because while the War Chief is eligible, the Master is not and if the War Chief actually IS the Master, I'm leaning towards ineligible here. But I'll think about it, especially as someone would like to claim it. (I think robot!Lucie, being presumably a completely separate being would scrape through.)

Anyway, just so you know, I decided to include the last prompt anyway - it's been claimed already! \o/ (I'll probably exclude that particular take on the character next year, but it's definitely one of those ridiculous grey areas our fandom is so wonderfully full of!)

Yep, robot!Lucie was an assistant AI programmed to have a personality similar to the real Lucie, but didn't have any of her memories.
